During the Summer ’15, Fall ’15 and Spring ’16, Canvas, a learning management system (LMS), was piloted in over 61 courses. During the pilot, feedback was gathered from faculty and students as to how Canvas met the needs for teaching and learning at Rice University. The newly formed Information Technology Council Academic Technologies subcommittee, chaired and seated with faculty members, talked to their colleagues about what they use in an LMS. After much discussion and feedback, the committee unanimously voted to recommend the university move to Canvas as its LMS beginning with Fall ’16. Read the report here.
The deadline for migration requests for the Fall 2017 semester is July 7th. After this date, we will be able to create blank Canvas course sites for guaranteed Fall 2017 usage. Migration requests received after July 7th will be handled on a first come-first serve basis and are not guaranteed to be available for August 21st. Information will be available on how to copy materials over from Owlspace to Canvas and this would also be a great time to look at the different ways that materials can be presented in Canvas. If you would like to use Canvas, please fill out one of the Request Forms below:
Please note, migration requests are for Course Site migrations from Owlspace to Canvas only. A working group will be formed in the Fall to determine alternate options for Project Sites.
Workshops are being offered continuously and 1-1 sessions can be scheduled as needed. If you would like to learn more about Canvas, the Introduction to Canvas workshop is a great place to start.
